In this lecture, we will study the Pathophysiology of Burns ①: Types of Burns and Depth, which must be understood to assess and treat burn patients. Burns are not simply a matter of skin damage. The mechanisms of damage and risks vary depending on the various causes, such as heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, and inhalation injuries; furthermore, more serious internal damage may be hidden beneath the surface than the visible skin damage. In particular, inhalation injuries occurring at fire scenes, carbon monoxide poisoning, and deep tissue damage caused by electrical burns must be considered during the initial assessment.
