Do We Need a Jewish Anti-Zionist Global Movement? – Ilan Pappé – 10 May 2026

Is there a place for a distinct Jewish anti-Zionist contribution to the Palestinian struggle — and if so, what should it look like? Israeli historian Prof Ilan Pappé surveys the emerging global Jewish anti-Zionist movement, including the First Jewish Anti-Zionist Congress in Vienna (June 2025) and preparations for the Second Congress in Dublin (26–28 June 2026). Pappé situates the movement within three long-term processes he sees as capable of transforming the reality on the ground in Palestine: the restructuring of the Palestinian national movement; the international isolation of Israel and the move from boycott and divestment to state-level sanctions; and the dissociation of Jewish communities — particularly in the United States — from Zionism. He then turns to the question rarely asked of the so-called peace process: what should Jewish collective life look like in a decolonised Palestine? 🎙 Prof Ilan Pappé: Israeli historian, professor of history at the University of Exeter, director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, and chair of the Nakba Memorial Foundation. Born in Haifa, he left Israel in 2008 and now advocates for BDS, including the academic boycott. His books include "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine", "Ten Myths About Israel", "A History of Modern Palestine", and most recently "Israel on the Brink: And the Eight Revolutions That Could Lead to Decolonization and Coexistence" (Beacon Press, 2025).
