Disney Updates Pirates With Cutting Edge Tech To Mixed Reviews From Guests | Was This Needed?

So Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland just came back from nearly a two month closure, and Disney slipped in a change that has the fanbase genuinely split. The iconic skeleton sitting on the treasure in the Pirates Grotto? He's not the same anymore. The old version used a mirror effect to show a transformation between a living face and a skull. Classic Disney Imagineering trick. Super clever. People loved it. But now? Disney has swapped that out for a fully transforming Audio-Animatronic. The pirate picks up a golden coin, gets cursed, his face physically transforms into a skull right in front of you, his arm drops, the curse breaks... and then he looks at the coin again. Over and over. An endless loop of greed. Which honestly, as a concept, is really cool storytelling. But here's where it gets interesting. The old mirror effect had this charm to it. It was one of those things you might not even fully understand as a kid, but it felt magical. And now Disney has replaced that with new tech. The question everybody is asking is simple: did they do this because it actually makes the ride better, or did they do it to flex what they can do with modern animatronics? The rest of the ride is pretty much the same. The queue got some fresh paint and some new flowers around the attraction plaque, which is a nice touch. But the ride experience itself? That one new figure is the story. I genuinely think the new animatronic concept is great. The idea of a pirate cursed by his own greed into an endless loop is peak Pirates energy.
