Disney's Americana Problem

One of the weirdest moves that Disney has recently made is the erasure of the western theme from Frontierland. Tiana's Bayou Adventure introduced 1920s New Orleans and the new off-road Cars attraction very obviously destroys the theme. I think part of the explanation behind this direction is that Disney sees the western genre as problematic and it got me thinking about how Disney pulls from American history and culture more broadly. I think about problematic attractions like Disneyland's Indian Village, Epcot's American Adventure and what a mess the never built Disney's America park would have been. Today, I want to take a look at many aspects of Americana in the Disney parks and see what makes it all so controversial.
