Yorkshire Royal at Chesterfield (Crooked Spire)
I filmed Yorkshire Royal in the Ringing Chamber and outside, but I don't know what was rung on the back 8 when in the Belfry. All I know is the tenor ringer can't have rung the bell much before! lol Yorkshire Royal is a lovely method, but I am yet to learn it! It's my next challenge after Cambridge Royal, which (if I can remember it) is dead easy. Chesterfield bells are great if they are struck well. Some of them are very odd-struck, especially the 9th. Chesterfield church is famous for it's Crooked Spire. There are many stories about how it came to be crooked, my favourite is that it saw a virgin getting married there and it was so surprised it turned round to have a look! The more scientific story is that wet wood was used in it's construction, and the wood then dried and warped, creating the famous spire. This seems to be the correct theory, as there are three sets of wood in the spire: the original set, and then a second set put in in the early 16th Century, and a final set put in in the late 16th Century. The spire is so full of wood that if stood inside you cannot see more than a few metres up. Also, never stand at the base of the spire with it tilting over you and look up. You feel as if you are falling off the tower! It is very strange. Chesterfield College are keeping an eye on the spire (see the bit in the video) and keep the church updated as to it movement of it: it doesn't stand still! Please rate, comment, and subscribe!
