We Hiked To Nanny Falls & Uncovered Jamaica’s Hidden Maroon History 🇯🇲 🌿🇯🇲 Welcome back to LivingWithKeelie! Today we’re taking you on an unforgettable journey through Moore Town, Portland, Jamaica — home of the Maroons and one of the most historically significant communities in the Caribbean. Our adventure begins with a visit to the famous Bump Grave, the resting place associated with National Hero Nanny of the Maroons, one of Jamaica’s greatest freedom fighters. We also visit the grave of a former Maroon Colonel, explore the beautiful Wild Cane River (Rio Negro), and learn more about the rich history that helped shape Jamaica. Next, we stop at the Moore Town Heritage Centre, where we discover fascinating artifacts including the Abeng (the traditional Maroon communication horn), old farming tools, hunting spears, fish pots, irons, and historical photographs dating back to 1908. Using modern technology, we even enhanced and colorized some of these rare photographs to get a glimpse of what Moore Town may have looked like over 100 years ago. The adventure continues as we join visitors from Nigeria on a journey to the breathtaking Nanny Falls. Due to a late start, we traveled part of the route by bus before beginning our hike. Once we arrived, the beauty of the falls made every step worthwhile. We spent hours swimming, relaxing, enjoying nature, and connecting with visitors who were eager to learn more about Jamaica’s history and African roots. Through determination, military skill, and deep knowledge of the terrain, they preserved their freedom and culture, leaving a legacy that continues today.
