Living in Rome for a Month: Could We Actually Live Here Long-Term?

Could we live in Rome, Italy as slow-traveling retired nomads? After spending a full month here, we’re sharing what daily life, walkability, safety, food, healthcare, and the cost of living in Rome really feel like, along with our honest answer about whether this iconic city could be a longer-term home base for us. In this episode, we explore Rome through the lens of livability and slow travel and answer one big question: Could we actually live here for three months or more? What We Cover in This Video Why Rome Our final stop in Italy this trip after Venice and Florence and a great city to slow down and experience beyond the major tourist highlights. Population and Neighborhood Feel Rome is a massive city, yet many neighborhoods are calm and livable. We stayed about 1.5 miles outside the center, which gave us a completely different impression of the city. Crime and Safety Pickpockets, protests, police presence and how we felt both during the day and at night. Main Industries Tourism, government, film and media and how locals interacted with us during our stay. Climate A Mediterranean climate with mild winters, hot summers and beautiful fall weather. Here’s what to expect if you stay for a month or longer. Walkability Rome surprised us with how walkable it is. We walked everywhere, including from the Colosseum to the Vatican. Beautiful sidewalks, cobblestones, stairs and things to know before choosing to live car-free here. Public Transportation Buses, trams, taxis and trains and how easy it is to get around without renting a car. Airport Access Rome’s two airports, FCO and CIA, and how quickly you can reach them from different parts of the city. Things to Do Even with 30 days, we still didn’t see everything. Highlights include the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Vatican City, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trastevere and countless churches, piazzas and fountains. Tip: Book major attractions early. Closures and sellouts happen frequently. Food Scene Pasta, pizza, pastries, gelato and cappuccinos. What we loved, where we found affordable meals and how much we typically spent when eating out. Healthcare in Rome Daphne injured her shoulder and ended up at an international hospital. From the urgent care visit to the x-ray, cortisone shot, MRI and follow-up, here’s what medical care in Rome was actually like and what it cost. Cost of Living Meals, groceries, transportation and our Airbnb, which was $2,200 for the month with a long-stay discount. Rome isn’t the cheapest city, but with planning it can be manageable. Overall Vibe A big city that somehow feels peaceful. Storybook neighborhoods, historic buildings everywhere and a beautiful rhythm to everyday life. Could We Live Here Rome gets a soft no for us. It is absolutely livable, but there are many more places we want to explore before returning.
