After Years Abroad, We Spent 30 Days Living in America Again

After years of full-time travel and slow living abroad, we spent 30 days living in America again to see what everyday life felt like on the same $5,000 monthly budget we use around the world. We rented an Airbnb in Seattle, Washington and tried to live exactly the way we do when we’re overseas. We shopped for groceries, visited local coffee shops, walked our neighborhood, used public transportation, ate at local restaurants, and tracked our spending just as we would in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Turkey, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, or the United Kingdom. What surprised us wasn’t just the cost of living in America. It was how different everyday life felt after spending the last two years living abroad. In this video we share: • What it cost us to live in Seattle for 30 days • Whether $5,000 is enough to live comfortably in America • Grocery, restaurant, and coffee shop prices • Walkability and daily life compared to Europe, Mexico, and Asia • The impact of car culture on everyday living • The biggest differences between life in America and life abroad • Our complete 30-day budget breakdown • Whether we could see ourselves living in America long term The biggest lesson from this month wasn’t about money at all. After years of living abroad, we realized that when we’re overseas, we’re explorers. Our days are focused on discovering new places, cultures, foods, and experiences. When we’re home in the United States, our focus shifts toward relationships. Time with family, friends, and the people we care about becomes the priority. Neither lifestyle is better. They simply fulfill different needs in our lives. Over the past two years, some of the places we’ve slow traveled through Liverpool, Edinburgh, Dublin, Ramsgate, Tavira, Portimão, Lisbon, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Hoi An, Da Nang, Cat Ba, Hanoi, Istanbul, Antalya, Venice, Florence, Rome, San Miguel de Allende, Playa del Carmen, Lagos, Valencia, Barcelona, and Seattle. As retired full-time travelers, returning to America gave us a unique opportunity to compare the cost of living, lifestyle, and daily routines in the United States versus the places we’ve called home around the world. If you’ve ever wondered: • Is living abroad cheaper than living in America? • Can retirees comfortably live on $5,000 a month? • What is the real cost of living in Seattle or any US big city? • What is it like returning to America after living abroad? • Is full-time travel worth it? • What are the biggest differences between life in America and life overseas? This video is for you. Hi! We’re Rick and Daphne from Retired Nomad Adventures.
