Citroen AX Buyers Guide, what to look out for

A guide on a few common issues to look out for when buying a Citroen AX. The AX used in this guide is a 1996 Dimension 954cc owned by my friend James. Rust behind the headlights, boot floor, wheel arches, around the fuel cap and sills are common areas of rust on AXs. The bodykit AXs (GT, GTi, Sport and Forte) may be rusty under the bodykit, so be aware of this. AXs built after 1994 were galvanised so rust isn't as much of an issue then earlier models. Lacquer peel can be common on paintwork especially on metallic green and metallic red cars. Head gasket failure on petrol TU engine cars can be spotted with white/beige mayonnaise gunk on the radiator cap. This happens when oil from the engine has leaked into the cooling system. Drive shafts and CV boots commonly fail, check for split CV boots and clicking from the driveshafts when driving. The headlight adjusters commonly fall apart on AXs and can be hard to find new replacements now. Rubber seals especially on the sunroof and boot commonly perish and so will leak water on wet days. Interior plastic trim can be fragile, including the gear knob, heater control knob, sunroof opener, and general trim. On later petrol AXs built from 1996, it may be common for them to fail the emmissions when having an MOT. This is more so because the Catalytic Converter is designed for Euro 1 Emmissions standards even though 1996 onwards AXs will be tested under Euro 2 Emmissions regulations. A new Catalytic Converter seems to be the solution to get through the MOT each year, well for this particularAX in this video anyway.
