In 1997, a down on its luck Tyrrell tried a cheap inventive device that exploited a hole in the rule book and allowed them to develop a bit of extra downforce on tight and twisty circuits. When they tried it again with the new 1998 rules, it sparked off the other mid-grid teams trying it as well for some cheap performance gains. Some said they were ugly and should be banned.
