Mega Man 4 Any% Speedrun 38:20

This was a speedrun done on 10/17/23 for the game Mega Man 4 (1991-NES). This is the 25th best time out of 152 on the Mega Man Leaderboards (https://megamanleaderboards.net/index...) What a run! First 8 robots were very solid, the time I got through these first 8 stages was about 18:27. 18:30 and below is usually the bar that needs to be cleared for a sub 38 minute time. Obviously, we didn't achieve that but clearly going in the right direction. As for the more minute details: First 8 robos were once again great with minimal mistakes for my skill level. We didn't get the greatest luck with either Dust Man or Skull Man, Skull Man in particular cost us 3 seconds that was out of our hands. This luck balanced out in the fortress stages (and arguably was much more in our favor) that it ultimately didn't matter. The unexpected gold split on Toad man was also nice, especially given I played like coward. Fortress stages, on the other hand were kind of garbage. Basically every stage with the exception of Cossack 3 had mistakes that cost at least a second per stage if not more. Some weren't too bad (Cossack 1) but some like Cossack 2 and Wily 1 were easily avoidable. Wily 2 in particular was trash, a ton of hits, bad movement and bad luck led me to losing time on a split where I honestly think I could gain five seconds overall. I have never had a good Wily 2, the second I do is probably the day I get that sub 38. Wily 3 had intense amount of luck to make up for the kind of bad play. Multiple parts of the refight I should have been punished for not playing as tightly as possible. In particular Dust Man was fought in such a slow way that the fact I wasn't completely punished for it was a miracle. The Wily fight in that stage was also poorly done, and yet despite that I got a five second gold split. Goes to show how luck can result in high variability in that stage (difference between best and worst pattern from Drill Man is 13 seconds for instance)! Wily 4 had bad luck that cost me 5 seconds or so, and then I threw away 2 seconds myself in the fight, but at that point I knew I had my goal as long as I didn't completely biff it, so I'm just happy I got through it and got a pretty significant PB. I'll be taking a small break from this game to learn a new speedgame (Rockman and Forte) but the plan will be to get back to this sooner rather than later.
