RevBio, headquartered in Massachusetts, announced that it has received FDA approval to begin a pilot clinical trial for its regenerative bone adhesive, TetraNite, targeting dental ridge augmentation. The trial will focus on evaluating TetraNite's safety and effectiveness without the need for barrier devices like membranes or meshes, or screws or pins. The most significant feature of TetraNite is that it is a bone graft material that bonds directly to existing bone. The graft material is designed to form a stable support structure within the surrounding bone, gradually replacing it with natural bone tissue during the healing process. RevBio explained that it converts to bone within a clinically meaningful timeframe, while maintaining volume, adhesion, and mechanical stability. Alveolar bone augmentation is one of the most common procedures performed to place implants in patients with advanced bone resorption following tooth loss. In fact, approximately 44% of patients undergoing implant treatment already have missing teeth, often requiring bone grafting. However, the currently used particulate bone grafting method fails to achieve satisfactory results in over 30% of cases, often leading to reoperations or prolonged treatment periods. This technology was developed with research funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), and RevBio anticipates that this clinical trial will mark a turning point in improving both the efficiency and prognosis of implant-related surgeries. The dental community, both domestically and internationally, is focusing on whether this new approach, called adhesive bone grafting, can change the standards of future implant surgery.
