In the second episode from the southern French region of Occitanie, Rail Away follows two train routes. We travel by national railway to Narbonne on the Mediterranean Sea. Then we board a unique tourist train—"Le Train Rouge"—that will take us from the coast to the foot of the Pyrenees. In Toulouse, we board the SNCF train to Narbonne. The railway route practically runs alongside the Canal du Midi. This is the oldest canal in Europe, a technical marvel completed in 1681. Many products were transported along the canal. However, this function quickly became obsolete when the train began operating here in the mid-19th century. The Canal du Midi now primarily serves a tourist purpose. After a brief introduction to Perpignan, we travel to Rivesaltes. There, "Le Train Rouge" awaits us for a journey through the land of the Cathars and Fenouillèdes. The Cathars formed a mysterious sect in the 13th century that opposed the Catholic Church. This led to considerable unrest and fighting in this region. Several castles and the city of Carcassonne are reminders of that time. Immediately after departure, we drive through the vast vineyards of Languedoc-Roussillon, one of the country's most important wine regions. On the last leg of the route, it becomes clear where we will end up: at the foothills of the Pyrenees.
