Barcelos prepara uma nova organização do estacionamento no centro da cidade

Barcelos is preparing a new parking organization in the city center. Starting July 15th, new parking meters will be in operation, a measure that the City Hall assures is based on technical studies of mobility and traffic carried out for the urban area. The announcement was made by Mayor Mário Constantino Lopes, who explained that this reorganization aims to make the use of public space more efficient, improve car circulation, and increase the availability of parking spaces for those who need to park in the city center. According to the studies, about 70 percent of trips in Barcelos are made by car, resulting in high occupancy of parking spaces for long periods. The new strategy aims to create a better balance between residents, businesses, and visitors, guaranteeing nearby parking for residents, greater turnover near local businesses, and directing long-term parking to peripheral areas. Paid parking will operate only on weekdays, between 9 am and 7 pm, and on Saturdays, between 9 am and 1 pm. Outside of these hours, parking remains free. The rates are set at 60 cents per hour in medium-term areas and 80 cents per hour in short-term areas. The municipality also foresees support measures for residents and businesses. Residents covered by the regulations will be able to obtain a resident's badge, while businesses will have access to a specific badge, both at an annual cost of 10 euros. For workers in the metered areas, the municipality also offers the possibility of free use of Barcelos Urban Transport, encouraging more sustainable mobility alternatives. The new parking regulations were unanimously approved at a Council meeting and received 96.4 percent of the votes in favor at the Municipal Assembly.
