The "A" in its name signifies its status as a prototype, developed before the YB family of engines was used in road or race cars. Development timeline 1984: Ford commissions Cosworth to develop a turbocharged, 16-valve engine based on the Pinto engine block. The prototype is designated YBA. 1985: The YBA prototype leads to the production version, the YBB, which is used in the first Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. 1986: The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is introduced with a 204 horsepower YBB engine. The homologation of 5,000 units is built to satisfy Group A racing requirements. 1987: An evolution model, the Sierra RS500, is introduced with a YBD engine. It features a larger T4 turbocharger and eight injectors, raising the road-going power to 225 horsepower and race power to over 550 horsepower. Technical specifications The YB series was based on the Ford Pinto engine block but featured a number of Cosworth modifications: Engine block: Iron construction, with aluminum alloy cylinder heads. Valvetrain: Double overhead camshaft (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder. Aspiration: Turbocharged with a Garrett turbocharger. Displacement: 1,993 cc (121.6 cu in). Output: The original YBB production version produced 204 PS (201 hp). Legacy and modifications The YB engine became a legendary tuner's platform due to its durability and tunability. Race versions of the engine were able to produce over 550 horsepower and dominate touring car racing from 1987 to 1992.
