Psychosomatik: Der blinde Fleck – warum wir die Psyche nicht ohne den Körper verstehen können
Psychosomatics is often viewed in only one direction: psychological stress causes physical symptoms. But what about the reverse? How do physical illnesses, nutritional deficiencies, sleep problems, or hormonal changes affect our mental health? In this episode of "Ready for the Couch?", certified psychologist and psychotherapist Sabine Bimmler explains why body and mind should never be considered separately. Using vivid patient examples, she shows how stress and inner tension can contribute to back pain, tension headaches, or digestive problems—and why physical causes sometimes manifest as depression, burnout, or an anxiety disorder. Exhaustion, lack of motivation, and concentration problems are not automatically purely psychological. Iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, sleep deprivation, or hormonal changes can also cause similar symptoms or exacerbate existing psychological stress. The crucial question, therefore, is not: "Is it physical or psychological?" but rather: "How do body, mind, nervous system, and living conditions interact?" In this episode, you'll learn: • What psychosomatics really means • Why psychosomatic complaints are by no means imaginary • How stress can influence back pain and tension headaches • Why physical causes can resemble psychological symptoms • Which symptoms can occur with iron or vitamin B12 deficiency • How an underactive thyroid can affect mood and motivation • Why medical evaluation and psychotherapy complement each other • Why sleep, exercise, nutrition, and nutrient intake are essential for mental health • How the body can be actively involved in psychotherapeutic treatment Targeted supplementation instead of indiscriminate supplementation Dietary supplements are not a treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, or psychosomatic complaints. They do not replace a balanced diet, a medical examination, or psychotherapy. However, if a deficiency has been diagnosed or targeted supplementation is medically advisable, the quality of the supplement also plays an important role. The most important message of this episode: Mental health doesn't begin solely in the mind. Our experiences always take place within a body—with a nervous system, a metabolism, a hormonal balance, and individual physical predispositions. A holistic approach therefore takes thoughts, feelings, relationships, living conditions, and the body equally seriously. Because: The body is always on the couch with you. Our experiences always take place within the body.
