In this shiur we dive deep into Parshas Balak and Pinchas, picking up right where the story gets intense. We unpack how Bilam's strategy wasn't about curses at all — it was about drawing the Jewish people into illicit relations and idol worship through the Baal Peor. We walk through the whole setup: the tents, the seduction, the wine, and how step by step the Midianite women lured Jewish men into worshiping an idol without them even realizing what was happening. We then dig into the Gemara in Sanhedrin to understand the full backstory of Zimri ben Salu, the prince of the tribe of Shimon, who showed up in front of Moshe Rabenu with Kozbi the Midianite princess and 24,000 tribesmen behind him, openly challenging Moshe's authority. The Gemara reveals that at that moment Moshe forgot the halacha of kanai — and that forgetting itself made space for Pinchas to act. We learn what Pinchas actually saw that moved him to act, the three opinions in the Gemara from Rav, Shmuel, and Rabbi, and the incredible detail of how he hid the metal tip of his spear inside his cloak, leaning on the wooden handle like a walking stick to get past the 24,000 men. Then we go through all twelve miracles — six from the Gemara and six from the Midrash — that happened in that one moment, including the angel lifting the tent entrance, the spear growing longer, and why as a Kohen, Pinchas wasn't affected by tumah.
