BAAL EXPOSED: The Ancient Spirit Still Fighting for Israel

Shalom Aleichem Chevra, welcome back! What if the most dangerous weapon ever used against the Jewish people wasn't a sword or a curse — but a tent city and a seduction trap? In this shiur we dig deep into one of the most intense and misunderstood episodes in the Torah — the story of Baal Peor, Bilaam's hidden plot, and what Pinchas had to come stop. Before we can even begin to understand Pinchas and his zealotry, we have to go back to the end of Parshat Balak and trace exactly how the whole catastrophe unfolded. Bilaam couldn't curse the Jewish people — he knew they were a blessed nation. So instead, he cooked up a different scheme entirely: he advised Balak to set up a tent city filled with women, wine, and ultimately a statue of Baal Peor, all designed to lure the men of Israel into immorality and idol worship. We go through the Gemara in Sanhedrin 106a step by step, and the Chevra will see just how layered and calculated this honeypot really was. There's an older woman outside the tent, a younger woman inside, non-Jewish wine flowing, and the seduction unfolding piece by piece — each step pulling the person further in before they even realized what was happening. The Gemara makes it clear: the whole point was that Hashem's anger is only truly aroused in connection with Baal Peor and immorality. Bilaam understood this better than anyone, and it was his master plan to strip the Jewish people of their divine protection. We also cover what actually happened to Bilaam — his death by the sword during the war with Midian in Numbers 31, why the book of Yehoshua calls him a kosem rather than a navi, and a remarkable teaching about how Bilaam started as a genuine tzaddik with real prophecy but became completely corrupted by money and power. We wrap up by connecting all of this to the role of Pinchas, kannaim, and why Moshe was told specifically to judge those who worshipped the idol while the zealot had to step up and deal with the immorality. It all fits together into one of the most important spiritual lessons in the entire Torah.
