In a conversation with #LíneaUno on #RadioUsach, Senator Claudia Pascual analyzes the controversial bill that seeks to penalize leaks in criminal investigations and warns about the risks that ambiguous wording could pose to investigative journalism and the public's right to be informed. "If it weren't for leaks, we wouldn't know about cases like Hermosilla, Milicogate, or the Carabineros fraud," she argues during the interview. The member of the Senate's Constitutional Committee argues that sanctions should fall on those who violate the duty of confidentiality within public institutions, and not on journalists or media outlets that disseminate information of public interest. She also proposes strengthening the ethical role of professional associations to address leaks that do not contribute to investigations, without affecting press freedom. "We could end up criminalizing investigative journalism," she warns. In the second part of the conversation, Claudia Pascual also addresses the discussion surrounding the mega economic reform and criticizes the Ministry of Finance's lack of flexibility on issues such as corporate tax cuts, tax stability, and tax offsets.
