How Moving Motivators Identify Intrinsic Motivation in Scrum Teams
What motivates your team? How is your team intrinsically motivated and by what drivers? Our Louise Brace chatted with Silvan Schaer to learn how him and his 150-person developer team at Bison group use Management 3.0 exercise Moving Motivators to identify motivators during change management in their scrum team. "The reason why I chose this exercise [Moving Motivators] is because we were facing some changes in this organization--product strategy changes--and I just wanted to find out how these changes were affecting the team," Schaer said, as well as "What is the root of the motivation for the team itself because we never talked about that in a retrospective where we tried to figure out how who is motivated in each way." Schaer also discovered the top and lowest motivators were the same for pretty much all team members. Schaer continued to say that while management was pushing hard to implement a certain kind of change, he felt this exercise empowered him to go back to them and say "If you want something from our team and if this is something that does really match to our top free motivators, then it's for free what we do and you don't have to push or explain quite a lot of it. It just matches with our motivation, and we're just going to do it. We're running for it!" He also used it to identify if any of the changes that were occurring negatively affected his team's main motivators. Schaer the adapted his role as scrum master to be sure to address this during retrospectives. Have you tried Moving Motivators? What did you think?
