The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP9 was introduced in the mid 1950s as a general purpose road switcher. SP had many of these, but only a few were set up specifically for passenger service. A few of these old SP diesels have been preserved. Notably, SP 5623 runs today on the Niles Canyon Railway in Fremont, California. This model of SP 5623 has been modified to resemble the engine in its modern state. Dan had to modify some details on the Athearn model, which originally represented the locomotive as-built. The headlights are done with fiber optics and warm white LEDs. It has a LokSound DCC and sound decoder. This one runs as good as it looks!
