Tomba di Maria Cristina d'Austria - Antonio Canova | storia dell'arte in pillole

Art history in brief is a journey by Artesplorando. Here I'll tell you about the Tomb of Maria Christina of Austria, a masterpiece by Antonio Canova. ▼▼CONTINUE BELOW▼▼ Antonio Canova was one of the many progressive artists who moved to Rome in the second half of the 18th century to experience the glories of classical art firsthand. The city had long been a must-see destination on the Grand Tour, the journey through the cultural beauties of Europe. In Rome, Canova studied some of the most important relics of antiquity and gradually consolidated his reputation as an excellent sculptor. He developed his neoclassical style over the many years he resided in the city. During a visit to Vienna in 1798, Canova was commissioned by the widowed Prince Albert of Saxony, Duke of Teschen, to create an imposing tomb for his recently deceased wife, Maria Christina, daughter of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The monument was not intended for Rome but for the Augustinian church in Vienna, and Canova adapted the design for a funerary monument in honor of Titian.
