Burnt Mountain to Big Rock | The loop you should do your first time at Dupont State Forest
Today we're going to be taking a look at my go-to loop when going to Dupont, this is a great way to get a first taste of the Asheville riding in a 6 mile loop as you'll be getting a lot of variety. You'll want to park at the Corn Mill Shoals trailhead and follow the trail of the same name to Burnt Mountain, which you will do as a clockwise loop, after that traverse Little River to climb Cedar Rock and descend Big Rock. It seems to be a common theme in this loop that the start of the descent is not very complicated, you'll mostly find speed and flow with some stuff sprinkled in, as oposed to the area towards the bottom where techincal riding comes into play, in the case of Burnt Mtn the change is pretty drastic from smooth to rowdy, on this day the water flowing over the rocks added quite a bit of challenge to it, definitely not the fastest i've gotten down, but still great fun. At the bottom, you'll end up on Corn Mill Shoals trail again, pat yourself on the back for surviving, dish out the respective high fives and head on out to climb Cedar Rock. The top is an iconic picture spot as there's a very big obvious cross at the intersection of Cedar and Big Rock, while you can head down by continuing on Cedar Rock, what most people do is go right into Big Rock. You'll ride a short section before you get to the obligatory picture spot, if you don't take a picture here it seems that you didn't even do the ride, this spot should also make the name of the trail pretty self explanatory. While North Carolina has many amazing spots to just bask in the view, this one is one of the most amazing and easy access ones. Just make sure not to joke about who wants to do a stoppie just before the cliff, someone might take it seriously. After you've, hopefuly, survived the pictures is when this trail shows its best riding, constantly switching between tacky dirt and perfectly smooth yet grippy rock it'll descend over terrain that's decently techincal but still feels flowy, its only at the end, same as with Burn Mountain that the trail gets rowdy. Of course, as luck would have it I managed to keep my lens clean till the best part when, well, you can see that anyoing drop on the lens, i'm still leaving the video because that section is too much fun to cut out. Well guys, that's it for today, I hope you had fun coming along, I will see you for the next one and happy riding! Dupont State Forest on Trailforks: https://www.trailforks.com/region/dup...
