Glasgow to East Kilbride Railway, 125th Anniversary - 31 October 1993
The Glasgow to East Kilbride railway celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1993. To celebrate, 3 steam hauled journeys ran from Glasgow Central to East Kilbride. The preserved carriages were pulled by LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 44871. A class 37 diesel locomotive (37275 - renamed "Oor Wullie" in October 1993) followed each journey to take the carriages back to Glasgow Central. The steam locomotive ran light on the return journey. Each train called at Clarkston on the outward journey only. There was no scheduled service on Sundays at the time, so the trains used the Glasgow bound track in both directions between Busby Junction (after Pollokshaws West station) and Busby station where the line becomes single track to East Kilbride.
