15 Tajemnic po Stalingradzie: Co Się Stało, Gdy Afrika Korps Starło Się z Montgomerym?
The clash between Erwin Rommel's German Afrika Korps and the British forces commanded by Bernard Montgomery went down as one of the decisive chapters of the North African campaign during World War II. After a long series of attacks and counterattacks in the desert, both commanders prepared for a confrontation that would secure strategic control of the region. Rommel, renowned for his skill in maneuver warfare and rapid action, found himself facing a completely reorganized British army, heavily reinforced by massive supplies and determined to turn the tide of the conflict. The battle culminated at El Alamein, where Montgomery relied on a meticulously planned strategy based on overwhelming logistical and artillery superiority. Unlike previous engagements, the British commander avoided unnecessary risks and carefully prepared every phase of the offensive. At the same time, the Afrika Korps was grappling with severe supply problems, lacking fuel, ammunition, and replacement vehicles—factors that limited Rommel's ability to execute the rapid maneuvers that had previously made his forces a desert legend. For weeks, both armies fought intense combat amid minefields, relentless bombardments, and fierce infantry and armored attacks. British forces gradually decimated German and Italian positions until they had created a permanent breach in their defenses. Although the Afrika Korps put up remarkably tenacious resistance and launched numerous counterattacks, the Allied superiority in materiel ultimately prevailed, forcing Rommel to order a westward retreat to avoid the complete destruction of his forces. The defeat at El Alamein marked a turning point for the entire war in Africa. Shortly thereafter, Allied landings in Morocco and Algeria confronted the Axis with a two-front war, hastening their final retreat. A few months later, German-Italian forces were trapped in Tunisia and finally capitulated in May 1943. The African campaign ended with a decisive Allied victory, cementing Montgomery's position as one of the most prestigious commanders of the conflict and ending the myth of invincibility that had accompanied Rommel's Afrika Korps for years.
