Droga do Leningradu: Hitlerowska Grupa Armii Północ | Pełny Dokument
Army Group North was one of three major formations deployed by Nazi Germany during Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, which began on June 22, 1941. Under the command of Field Marshal Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb, this massive force was tasked with advancing through the Baltic states and capturing the strategic city of Leningrad. For Adolf Hitler, the capture of the city represented not only a military victory but also a symbolic blow to the Soviet regime, as it was considered the cradle of the Bolshevik Revolution. In the first months of the campaign, Army Group North advanced at lightning speed, routing numerous Red Army units and occupying vast areas of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. However, as they approached Leningrad, Soviet resistance intensified, and the difficult terrain began to hamper operations. Instead of launching a direct assault on the city, Hitler ordered it surrounded and subjected to a prolonged siege, intended to force its inhabitants to surrender through starvation and exhaustion. This marked the beginning of one of the most tragic episodes of World War II. The prolonged siege of Leningrad lasted nearly 900 days and brought unprecedented human suffering. Millions of civilians were trapped inside the city, facing extreme hunger, freezing temperatures, constant bombing, and disease. Meanwhile, Army Group North struggled to hold its ground in the face of repeated Soviet counterattacks in a war of attrition that consumed men, ammunition, and resources at an increasingly rapid pace. What was initially planned as a quick campaign ultimately turned into a prolonged and extremely costly conflict. Over time, the growing pressure of the Red Army forced the German forces to retreat. Soviet offensives in 1944 finally broke the siege of Leningrad and pushed Army Group North back toward the Baltic states, where many of its units were cut off. The army, which had begun the invasion with hopes of a decisive victory, found itself trapped in trench warfare, contributing to the complete collapse of the German Eastern Front. The history of Army Group North reflects both Germany's immense military might in 1941 and the limits of a strategy that blatantly underestimated the Soviet Union's capacity for resistance.
