Dr. Pamela Ruegg discusses how we determine if a cow has mastitis. Dairy farmers and veterinarians can use many tests to detect mastitis in dairy cows. This includes: Observation of foremilk California Mastitis Test Somatic cell counts Automated conductivity sensors On farm culturing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) MALDI-TOF Each test has different benefits and drawbacks, and some test are more useful for herd screening while other are used to justify removal from the herd.
