Selective dry cow therapy: What does the science say?

Dr. Pamela Ruegg discusses the Journal of Dairy Science Communications article by Juliana Leite de Campos et al, 2024, Variation in partial direct costs of dry cow therapy on 37 large dairy herds. In this paper, the researchers determined that cows were eligible for selective dry cow therapy using teat sealant only, no antibiotics, if two conditions were met: 1. The cow had no clinical mastitis during the entire lactation 2. If all monthly somatic cell counts were less than 200,000 cells/mL Dairies can save about $5 per cow using selective dry cow therapy, or about $5,000 per herd with 1,000 lactating cows being dried off each year.
