THAILAND A WILDLIFE ODYSSEY PART 3 #thailand #wildlife #birding #birds #odyssey #orchids #nature
Thailand comprises of several distinct geographic regions, in the north is the mountainous area of the Thai highlands, with the highest point being Doi Inthanon at nearly 2,600 metres. The northeast, Isan, consists of the Khorat Plateau, bordered to the east by the Mekong River. The centre of the country is dominated by the predominantly flat Chao Phraya river valley, which runs into the Gulf of Thailand, and Southern Thailand runs down to the Malay peninsula. We are here in March and start our trip exploring Central Thailand around Phetchaburi bordering the Gulf of Thailand to the East and Myanmar to the West. We begin near the coast which is dominated by salt pans, situated on the Asian-Australian Flyway and at this time of year is home to tens of thousands of migrating shore birds. The flooded rice fields and intertidal mudflats are situated on the mangroves and I film a whole variety of shorebird and waders including some critically endangered rarities such as Nordman’s Greenshank, Great Knot, Asiatic Dowitcher, Red necked stint and the critically endangered Spoon billed sandpiper that has made the trip from it’s breeding grounds in the Russian Tundra. Then on to the Kuiburi and Kaeng Krachan National Parks and the surrounding areas where I film Guar, Sun Bear, Grey Peacock and Silver Pheasant, Lesser Mouse Deer and many more. From there we drive North to Khao Yai, one of Thailand's best-known national parks and home to an incredible natural spectacle of thousands of Wrinkle-lipped Bats emerging like a plume of smoke over the forest as the sun sets. We then Fly further North to Chaing Mai and visit Doi Pha Hom Pok and Mae Ping National Parks filming rarities such as Mrs Humes and Siamese Fireback Pheasants green tailed Sunbird Green Peafowl and many more, and finally to Doi Inthanon the highest mountain in Thailand, rising to over 2,500 metres. This beautiful diverse and friendly country really is a wildlife enthusiasts dream. If you get the chance, I’d go!
