What Makes A GOOD FPS Map?

In this devlog I discuss the work I have completed in the first month of creating an FPS game In Unity. The early Call Of Duty games, such as Call Of Duty Black Ops are great examples of First Person Shooter games that provided it's players with countless hours of fun. I decided that I would use the great examples that these games set, to help me decide how to best design levels for my FPS game. I think Firing Range is the greatest map to come out of the Call Of Duty franchise. I decided a good way to learn how to use ProBuilder and a good way to up my level design skills, was to recreate this fantastic map. Remaking this map gave me a great opportunity to try and analyse the thought process of the level designers who made it. I they excelled and manage to keep an FPS game as fun as possible with good map flow. In the 24 hours it took me to recreate this map, I have learnt so much. Not just about ProBuilder as a tool, but also about how my game currently functions in a realistic, well tested environment. I have put my FPS character controller through a good amount of testing with the creation of Firing Range, and have discovered some interesting limitations which I will need to keep in mind when designing the up coming levels for my game. My AI was also put through some extensive testing and I discovered many limitations that exists within it's functionality. Simple operations like climbing up stairs proved to be difficult for my FPS character controller, as well as the Third person character controller that is used to manage the AI in my game. This has been a massively useful exercise and I will definitely be creating more test case maps using ProBuilder, before replacing all of the assets in the maps I create with game ready versions that will hopefully carry the game to a successful place.
