This video will show you how pulmonary rehabilitation can help you live better with lung disease. Before starting your program, your healthcare team will need to know your medical history. For example, you may have had heart or blood vessel problems, so they will assess your lung function. Breathing tests will measure your inhalation and exhalation rate, or how much air your lungs can hold. A six-minute walk test may be performed. They may examine your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen level. Your medical team will use your medical history and test results to design your personalized program. Your program may include three main components: physical activity, education, and counseling. Over time, physical activity can make your lungs and heart work better. Additionally, it may increase the amount of time you can perform your daily activities such as work, shopping, and physical activity. If appropriate for you, your program will include aerobic exercise. This type of exercise makes breathing more difficult and makes your heart beat faster. In addition, strength training exercises can make your muscles stronger, and stretching exercises can improve your flexibility. Education may include classes that help you understand, manage, and cope with your lung disease. These classes will explain how the lungs normally function. They will also explain how diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), affect your lungs. You can learn two ways to control your breathing: in pursed-lip breathing, you inhale slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth with pursed lips; in belly breathing, you train the diaphragm muscle to do most of the work of breathing. Your healthcare team will talk with you about your medication and lifestyle changes. You will be shown how to use oxygen if you are receiving this therapy. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about your medication or if you experience side effects. It's important to take your medication as prescribed. If you smoke, lifestyle changes will include a plan to help you quit smoking. A nutrition expert will help you create an eating plan if you need to gain or lose weight. You'll also learn ways to prevent respiratory infections, such as certain types of pneumonia and the flu, through vaccination. Your healthcare team can work with you to design a plan to help you save energy; this can help you do more by avoiding overindulging in activity. Your program may also include counseling. This will help you address any worries or depression your lung health may cause. After a few months in the program, you may receive additional physical activities and undergo lung testing. These tests will help your healthcare team know if you are meeting your program goals. Goals may include improved tolerance for daily activities, fewer symptoms of the disease, and self-management and coping skills. ANH15147
