How to Take the SGR Train from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya | Madaraka Express Booking, Stations, Price
In this video, we take the Madaraka Express train from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya. We then continue just down the coast to Diani Beach. I’m going to cover booking tickets, getting to the station, costs, travel times, and more. This is a pretty easy trip to make. The train ride takes about 6 hours and you need to arrive at the station around an hour in advance. We bought our tickets online about a week in advance. The only way to pay is with Mpesa. Credit cards aren't accepted currently. This is annoying for international visitors. Hopefully, they'll change it soon. You can also buy tickets in person at the station. The train leaves 3 times per day, at 8am, 3pm, and 10pm. We took the 8am. We started our journey at about 6am. We took an Uber from our Airbnb to Nairobi Terminus. The train station is located south of the city, near the airport. The Uber ride took around 45 minutes and cost about 1100 shillings. Once we arrived at the station, we went through a series of security checks. There is loads of security here. It's kind of ridiculous for a train station. We also printed our tickets at the station from a kiosk. After passing through more security, we were led into a waiting area. The train boarded around 15 minutes before departure. It left right on time. The train was modern and reasonably comfortable. There were charge ports and restrooms. A food cart passed by several times, where you could buy drinks and snacks. The train is also air conditioned. It's warm but not uncomfortable. The train started operating in 2017 so it is still relatively new. The train travels at about 120km per hour or 75 miles per hour. The trip is 480km or about 300 miles. There are 3 classes: economy, first class, and premium. Economy costs 1,500 shillings, first costs 4500 shillings, and premium costs 12,000 shillings. These are one-way prices. We’ took economy class. The trip is somewhat scenic. It's mostly flat. The train does pass through Tsavo National Park. I spotted a couple of elephants from the train. Once we arrived at Mombasa Terminus, we exited the station and caught a shared taxi to Diani Beach. The ride cost 500 shillings and took around half an hour. Overall, the train is a great way to get to the coast from Nairobi. It's efficient and reliable and a lot cheaper than flying. I'd recommend it. Thank you for watching Where The Road Forks.
