Text: Luke 1:46–55 Tune: Tone IX (Tonus Peregrinus) In a special upload for the feast of the Visitation, today we present to you the Magnificat as most Lutherans throughout history have known and sung it—set to the majestic tonus peregrinus. The pairing of the biblical text (in German: "Meine Seele erhebet den Herren") with this tone, the ninth of the traditional psalm tones, is such a cornerstone of Lutheran liturgical practice that it formed the basis for not a few organ works by Lutherans of the Baroque period, among them Pachelbel and Buxtehude. Bach wrote an entire cantata on it, BWV 10. The Lutheran Kantor Project aims to provide recordings of the great Lutheran chorales which are lesser known among English-speaking Lutherans. These recordings are designed to increase familiarity with tune and text. It is the prayer of the founder of The Lutheran Kantor Project that Lutherans will rediscover the great treasury of hymns from their heritage, passed down over the last five centuries.
