Massie, 1857, alt.; but sts. 4–6, 10 based on J. Kelly, 1867. Tune: Augsburg, 1609. This hymn, one of Paul Gerhardt's best, has enjoyed a constant presence in Missouri Synod hymnals as well as those in Germany. Walther's Hymnal, and TLH after it, prescribed the tune Valet will ich dir geben ("Farewell I Gladly Bid Thee") for this hymnal. Lutheran Worship, following the lead of Lutheran Book of Worship and the German hymnals of the 20th century, appointed a different melody that has been paired with other texts over time, notably by Bach with Keinen hat Gott verlassen. LSB followed LW's lead. We have chosen that melody as well, for its vigorous character that matches the confident nature of the text. The Lutheran Kantor Project aims to provide recordings of the great Lutheran chorales which are lesser known among English-speaking Lutherans. These recordings are designed to increase familiarity with tune and text. It is the prayer of the founder of The Lutheran Kantor Project that Lutherans will rediscover the great treasury of hymns from their heritage, passed down over the last five centuries. May God bring it to pass. E-mail address for inquiries: [email protected]
