Locomotion goes Mainline | Stockton & Darlington Bicentenary - Day 1: Shildon - 26/09/25

Celebrating 200 Years of the modern public railway, the Stockton & Darlington Railway, a working replica of Stephenson's 'Locomotion' sets out onto the mainline, covering the modern day equivalent of the route across three days, recreating the opening train from the 27th September 1825. Day one of the S&D Bicentenary weekend saw the 'Locomotion' replica begin it's journey from the Locomotion Museum, where the original 1825 locomotive is currently displayed. Proceedings were led by Historian & Broadcaster Tim Dunn and NRM Senior Curator Anthony Coulls, who provided a running commentary throughout the morning. HRH Prince Edward would also be in attendance, riding the train along the Locomotion Museum's demonstration line. The train, consisting of three replica chaldron wagons and a replica of the S&D's passenger coach 'Experiment', began it's journey from alongside the 1840 Coal Drops at Shildon, running along the demonstration line. The train would pause outside the museum before moving onto the national network, headed for Darlington Hopetown. 'Locomotion' would also carry the number '54' on it's chimney, in reference to the original locomotive's attendance in the 1925 centenary celebrations, where it ran 54th in the cavalcade procession.
