In the fourth episode, the presenting trio visits the UNESCO Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve. This mystical world in the "wild west" of Lucerne is known for its extensive moors, imposing karst landscapes, and the Brienzer Rothorn. The focus of Bigna Silberschmidt's visit is the moorland landscapes, which make up about half of the Entlebuch area. She learns from the park director how the protection of the moors in 1987, after initial confusion among the population, ultimately led to the establishment of the park. Christian Bernasconi learns that the moors are not only habitats for numerous plant and animal species and huge stores of CO2, but also provide protection against flooding. They retain the often heavy rainfall in the region like a sponge and then slowly release it into the streams and rivers. A resourceful farming family demonstrates how the moors themselves are beneficial for agriculture. She has switched to miniature Irish Dexter cows, which thrive on the nutrient-poor feed and protect the sensitive soils. In addition to moorland conservation, the biosphere reserve is a pioneer in the field of renewable energy. Solar and wind power aren't the only sources used here. Alain Orange visits one of Switzerland's last commercially operating charcoal producers and learns about the traditional craft of charcoal burning.
