We also meet Arno, who has Down syndrome and actively helps out on the alpine pasture. Away from civilization, the Alpine farmers and their cows, pigs, and sheep head into the beautiful, rustic mountain landscape. Protecting 700 Blacknose sheep from wolves – at night, too. This is the summer job of Joshua King, an American who has lived in Switzerland for ten years. This is a first for the 46-year-old agricultural student. He also still has to learn how to use the thermal imaging drone and the wildlife cameras. Nerves are rising before the first night. At Alp Findels, everyone is eagerly awaiting the first cows. Arno Aliesch, 24, is making his way down to the valley to help his sister herd her cows. It's nothing unusual for a young man to travel alone, but for Arno, it is. He has Down syndrome and cannot live independently. On the Alp, however, everyone appreciates his help in the stable and with the animals, which is one of the reasons why summer is his favorite time up here. If you visit the Weirich Porath family at home, there's nothing to suggest that they spend their summer herding cows: The four family members live in Cologne, and the parents are professional musicians. That's one of the reasons why a double bass and violin are a must-have. Together with their four chickens, they set off for the Swiss mountains in their VW bus, which at first glance seems a bit untrustworthy.
