WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO: After watching this video, you'll understand the key components of constructive alignment and why it plays such a crucial role in effective instructional design. You can also use this knowledge to improve design flaws in your teaching practice. SUMMARY: In John Biggs's research on how students learn best, he found that students often performed better when they knew clearly what was expected of them AND how to achieve those expectations. This research led to the constructive alignment model. Constructive alignment is a way of looking at lesson design in which the learning objectives, learning activities, and assessment of a lesson or course are aligned. When all these components are consistently connected, students learn more effectively. Learning objectives are the starting point for aligned education. A learning objective describes what students should have learned as a result of the instruction you have designed. Learning activities are the activities you assign students to do or that students perform themselves to achieve the learning objectives. Assessment is how you determine whether students have achieved the learning objectives. Constructive alignment focuses on the coordination (alignment) between the components. Constructive alignment is not a design model but a way of looking at the connection between the various educational components. Constructive alignment therefore plays an important overarching role in all educational design.
