Work begins on Lower Hutt's Ava Bridge
This Labour Weekend KiwiRail begins work on Ava Bridge in Lower Hutt, which means the walkway has to close. We know the temporary loss of the walkway is a big thing for the community. We are working closely with Hutt City Council who will begin construction of a bigger, better and safer replacement early next year. In the meantime, please be safe. Ava Bridge will have frequent freight and passenger trains running on it day and night while its under repair. The only safe place for people to cross will be at Ewen or Waione Bridge until the new walkway is complete around the middle of 2026.
