Why did Korach decide to oppose Moses and Aaron after the spies' sin, and not before? What changed after this event, what prompted him to begin a struggle against their leadership and authority? His main argument: "The entire community is holy, so why do you exalt yourself above the rest?" Korach even proposed making the position of high priest rotating. The rabbi explains the profound Hasidic meaning of this conflict. Jews had previously understood that God's purpose is not simply spiritual life in the desert, but the fulfillment of the commandments in the material world. Korach drew the false conclusion from this: if physical action is the most important thing, then there is no difference between the actions of Moses and the ordinary Jew (for example, everyone wears the same tefillin), and therefore, hierarchy is unnecessary. Moshe answers, "In the morning, the Almighty will show." Morning symbolizes light. This means that physical actions cannot be performed dryly and mechanically. They must be filled with light—with sincere intention (kavanah), love, and awe of God. And it is precisely in this spiritual fulfillment of material actions that the level of Moshe and Aaron is immeasurably higher than the others.
