Leadership according to the Torah: judge each person with favor and find justification for them. In this video, Rabbi Levi Stambler comments on the weekly Torah portion, "Korach." He tells the story of the massive rebellion of Korach and his followers against the leadership of Moses and Aaron. The rabbi devotes special attention to Dathan and Aviram, Moses's longtime enemies, who had opposed him since the days of slavery in Egypt. When the Almighty decides to punish the rebels, Moses demonstrates the qualities of a true leader. Putting aside personal grievances stemming from years of persecution, he personally goes to the tents of Dathan and Aviram, attempting to reason with them and give them a chance for repentance (teshuvah) in order to save their lives. Drawing on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the rabbi draws the main spiritual lesson of this story: each of us contains a "piece of Moshe." We must learn to judge each person on the merits of their actions (kaf zechut), find justification for others' actions, and give even those who have harmed us a chance to improve. The Almighty does not desire the destruction of sinners; He awaits their repentance, and our task is to help those who have strayed return to the right path.
