Severe storms hit Moscow - torrential rain, thunderstorms, and hail trigger flooding

Severe weather swept across Moscow on Saturday, July 11, bringing torrential rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and localized hail. Meteorologists warn that wind gusts could reach 15–20 m/s, while up to 80% of the city’s average monthly rainfall is expected to fall over the weekend across Moscow and the surrounding region. The heaviest downpours have been recorded in the south, west, northwest, and central districts of the capital. The storm has already caused localized flooding, including water entering the vestibule of Trubnaya station on the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya metro line. Moscow Metro officials said the station remains fully operational, explaining that the water was diverted into the station’s drainage system and promptly cleared by maintenance crews. Weather conditions began deteriorating overnight on Friday, prompting Russia’s Hydrometeorological Center to issue a yellow weather alert for Moscow and the Moscow region. Emergency officials urged residents to avoid sheltering under trees, stay away from unstable structures, and refrain from parking vehicles near them. Forecasters expect heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to continue through July 12. Moscow’s Department of Transport advised residents to use the metro whenever possible, while city authorities called on motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, slow down before pedestrian crossings, and avoid using mobile phones while driving. Pedestrians were advised to cross streets only at designated crossings, ensure drivers have stopped before stepping onto the road, and remain indoors during the most intense thunderstorms. Officials stressed that extra caution is essential during severe weather. City services were placed on high alert ahead of the storm. Emergency response teams, engineering crews, and district authorities are on round-the-clock standby. Water-pumping equipment has been deployed to flood-prone areas, while crews continue clearing storm drains, drainage systems, and catch basins. Authorities have also taken preventive measures to secure residential and commercial buildings, transport infrastructure, retail facilities, and construction sites against strong winds. Meteorologists had warned earlier in the week that two weather systems—Cyclone Bernadette moving in from the North Atlantic and another cyclone advancing from the Caspian region—would merge over central Russia, bringing prolonged heavy rainfall. Forecasts indicate Moscow could receive as much as 80% of its typical monthly precipitation in just one weekend.
