How to Use a Guitar Strap. It might seem simple, but setting it up correctly is crucial. As you can see, when I let go of my guitar, it stays in place, which allows me to position the neck comfortably for better wrist alignment. A common mistake I see is having a strap that's too loose. When you stand up, if your guitar drops, it means your strap is too loose. Tighten it up a bit, so the guitar stays in place, even when you're moving around. This will make playing much more comfortable and reduce strain. If you’re using a solid-body guitar, like a Les Paul, I recommend a wider strap to distribute the weight better and avoid shoulder pain. For acoustic or lighter electric guitars, a leather strap with or without padding works great. If you’re new to this, I’ll link some recommendations below. Now, if your guitar strap is digging into your neck, it could be because you're pulling down on the neck too much. With practice, your grip will naturally lighten up.
