In this video, I’ll walk you through something essential for new guitar players: how to hold a guitar pick properly. Believe it or not, there’s no perfect way to do it! I’ve been playing for years, mostly self-taught, and held my pick “wrong” for a long time. But hey, I still make it work! First, let’s talk about picks. If you’re just starting, I recommend thin picks (around 0.50-0.60 mm). These are flexible and great for easing into strumming. Once you're comfortable, you can upgrade to medium picks like the Dunlop Tortex 0.73 mm or 0.88 mm. If you struggle with holding your pick, consider Max-Grip picks—they’ve got a sandpaper-like texture, making them easier to grip. For those with arthritis or finger issues, spring-loaded Black Mountain picks are a game-changer. I’ll also show you a couple of different ways to hold the pick, whether you’re playing rhythm or lead. The key is a loose, comfortable grip—firm enough that it won’t slip but not so tight that your hand tenses up.
