(Class 59-hauled freight train) Plumpton Level Crossing, East Sussex
Date filmed: 30/01/2023 Videos filmed at: 12:35 | 12:45 | 12:57 Route: East Coastway Line Plumpton Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barriers crossing with Obstacle Detection (MCB-OD) Location: Station Road, Plumpton Green Trains featured: Lowering 1 (0:00): Class 59 204 (Freightliner) - 1:20 6V00 Newhaven Day Aggregates (Flhh) ➡ Willesden S.W.S. - Lowering 2 (1:53): 2 Class 377s (214 & 104) (Southern) - 2:45 1F24 London Victoria ➡ Ore - Lowering 3 (4:00): 1) Class 66 107 (DB Cargo UK) - 5:23 6O13 Acton T.C. ➡ Newhaven Marine Aggregates Terminal Dbc 2) 2 Class 377s (451 & 131) (Southern) - 5:57 1F31 Eastbourne ➡ London Victoria A level crossing with an obstacle detection system and a total of four alarms found next to Plumpton Railway Station and a former signal box within the village of Plumpton Green. This is the line connecting Keymer Junction in Burgess Hill with Lewes and the rest of the East Coastway Line, as well as the Seaford Branch Line, and two of this line's daily freight services are seen passing by, along side two passenger services, in this video: one was an aggregates train from a Freightliner heavy-haul terminal in Newhaven to Willesden, hauled by one of only 15 Class 59 locomotives that were built for British Rail, with the other hauled by a Class 66 from Acton Terminal Complex to an aggregates terminal near the disused Newhaven Marine station. This level crossing was fully-renewed in 2016, though these works completely closed the level crossing for months whilst planning permission to install the current set-up were put through, as well as the renewal work itself, all rather controversially cutting the village in two with a lengthy diversion for an extended period of time. There are also three pedestrian lights here, though the positioning of one is a little strange as it's there to warn pedestrians that would be using a part of this road with no footway at all. In the same corner, a thin wigwag / road traffic light has been provided as the verge is taken up by a hedge. At the time of filming, an event was taking place at the adjacent Plumpton Race Course, meaning that this road saw multiple times as much traffic as usual. Usually a quiet road, it became very busy indeed. Train details sourced from: Real Time Trains: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/sear...
