Come closer, because our gardener Carol Costa explains how to save your zamioculca and even how to make cuttings from this incredible plant. The zamioculca (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a plant that grows very well, both indoors and outdoors, in flowerbeds. Today, you can find this plant in different sizes, from tiny ones, to normal-sized zamioculcas, to a giant version! Even though it is a super resistant plant, the zamioculca can go through some difficulties that end up making this warrior plant ask for our help. With a little attention to the signs, you can know what to do to recover your zamioculca. One of the most common problems is excess water, and this problem can be noticed when there are leaves with yellowish spots on the edges, as Carol shows in the video. If you don't water less, or if the plant is in a place with high humidity and no drainage, the problem will get worse until the stem starts to rot. This is because the zamioculca has a natural reservoir of water and nutrients in its roots, similar to a potato. If the yellow, burnt spot appears on the tip of the leaf, instead of on the edge, then the problem is not overwatering: it's a lack of water! Your zamioculca may be indoors in a more hidden place that makes watering difficult, or in a hallway with a lot of wind or even in a room with air conditioning. With a lack of water, the leaves dry from the tip to the base and, if nothing is done, the stem will become limp and wrinkled. It's time to water it and see if there's a better place for the plant in your home, if the culprit is the air conditioning or the wind. Is the plant really upset and needs to be repotted? Let's find out what needs to be done to save your zamioculca! When the pot is the same plastic one that the producer gave you, you can see that it is cramped because the container is crooked. The plant is pushing against the walls of the pot, asking for more space. Use scissors and get rid of the pot; you will hardly be able to remove the zamioculca without doing this. Then, loosen the roots from the edges to the center. This is the time to take cuttings from your zamioculca! If you notice small potatoes attached to the stem, you can separate them, sprinkle some cinnamon powder on them, and make your cutting. If you have been overwatering, first check to see if the plant shows signs of rot. If any part of the plant is soft and smells bad, it is rotten. Discard these parts to save your zamioculca. Since it is a slow-growing plant, be very patient and monitor the recovery of the zamioculca closely. To make a new pot, use a large container, make a drainage layer with Styrofoam or expanded clay, and cover it with a drainage blanket. Fill the seedling substrate with some dry organic matter, such as pine bark or small pieces of twigs, and also add a little sand. This is a plant that likes a well-drained substrate. Once planted, water the Zamioculca abundantly on the first day and, in the following waterings, use the finger-meter technique before adding water to the substrate.
