Recently, Chinese state media has brought the "Three Great Transformations" back into the public eye. However, many discussions immediately focus on current signals, neglecting a more fundamental question: what exactly were the "Three Great Transformations" intended to achieve? This episode of "Loud Interview" invites Professor Emeritus Ding Xueliang of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to re-examine the historical background of the "Three Great Transformations," starting with the constitutional discussions of 1946, the Second Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee in 1949, New Democracy, and the general line of the transition period. Ding Xueliang believes that to determine why this history is being re-discussed today, we cannot rely on speculation, but must first return to the institutional choices made at the time: China's original New Democratic line emphasized multiple forms of ownership, private economic space, land to the tiller, and maintaining economic and trade relations with developed Western countries. However, the transition was later greatly accelerated, and profound changes occurred in agriculture, industry and commerce, and the ownership structure. In this episode, Ding Xueliang focuses on analyzing: How were the Three Great Transformations first proposed? Why did New Democracy not proceed as originally envisioned? Why did agricultural collectivization initially trigger internal party divisions? What exactly do the policy conflicts between Mao Zedong and Deng Zihui, Liu Shaoqi, and Bo Yibo reveal? And how did this transformation influence China's private economy, property rights system, and the relationship between the state and society? This is an interview about history, and also an inquiry into the path China is taking today. Guest: Ding Xueliang: A native of Xuancheng, Anhui Province, he is a Chinese political sociologist and holds a PhD in Sociology from Harvard University. He is an Emeritus Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, formerly a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Corresponding Research Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Institute of the Australian National University, and also serves as an Honorary Professor or Consultant Professor at Zhejiang University and other universities. His main research areas include comparative modernization, globalization and international competition, public governance, and the political economy of transitional societies.
