More than seventy years ago, China launched the "Three Great Transformations" of agriculture, handicrafts, and capitalist industry and commerce. At that time, there was no fundamental disagreement among the top leadership of the CCP regarding the goal of eliminating private ownership; the real controversy lay in: what methods should be used for transformation, and how long should it take to complete? This latest interview features Ding Xueliang, a Chinese political sociologist and Harvard University sociology PhD, Emeritus Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He begins by discussing the early policy differences between Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi, tracing how agriculture transitioned from private land ownership to collectivization and people's communes, why handicrafts followed a relatively slow path, and how urban private industry and commerce gradually progressed from "low-level state capitalism" to "high-level state capitalism" and state ownership. The government became the main, or even the sole, buyer, controlling orders, prices, and raw material supplies; while private enterprises remained run by capitalists, they gradually lost the ability to independently determine production and transactions. Will this transformation mechanism from seventy years ago reappear in a new form today? More importantly, Ding Xueliang points out that what China's wealthy, private entrepreneurs, and non-state-owned sectors in the market economy are truly worried about today is the entry of state capitalism into an "advanced stage." This is not merely a historical review, but also a key to understanding future Chinese macroeconomic policies, the private sector, property rights relations, and the direction of state capital. Ding Xueliang: A native of Xuancheng, Anhui Province, he is a Chinese political sociologist and holds a PhD in Sociology from Harvard University. He is an Emeritus Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and has served as a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a Corresponding Research Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Institute of the Australian National University. He also holds honorary or advisory professorships at Zhejiang University and other universities. His main research areas include comparative modernization, globalization and international competition, public governance, and the political economy of transitional societies.
