Reaching for the Stars (Konami SCC 8-bit Original)
Well, here's something quite a bit different from what I usually do. Hopefully you enjoy this one - I definitely channeled into some more shmup-y sounding stuff, especially considering what Konami made around the time this SCC chip was relevant for them. If you're not familiar, the Konami SCC is just a 5 channel wavetable synth, kinda like Namco arcades/163 or PC-Engine. There's essentially two revisions: K051649, that was widely used in arcades and a lot of MSX games that share the wave memory between voice 4 and 5, and K052539, having extra memory, having unique wave memory for all 5 voices, but mostly relegated to remakes of their existing MSX games (Nemesis, Yie ar Kung Fu, etc), with the few notable exceptions being Snatcher and SD Snatcher. It's probably worth noting the first SCC's - the K005289, were much lesser in capabilites. 2 voices as opposed to 5, and the wavetable bitdepth is 4 (as opposed to 8 on the SCC). This variant ended up being used exclusively in a few Konami arcade boards, most famously the bubble system (that housed Gradius and Twinbee). Now here I'm using a typical SCC and PSG setup, and the PSG setup is basically just an AY-3-8910 (a 3 voice square wave chip that can also generate noise). This isn't running on real hardware or emulated hardware of any kind. I have to give out a bunch of thanks to MovieMovies1 for hooking me up with a lot of the sounds you're hearing here (for I've really just sequenced them in my DAW), please go check his music out: / moviemovies1 The video itself I've rendered with corrscope by nyanpasu64, it's actually a rather nice tool..
