And he plays some wonderful licks! Listen for instance at the hammer on/pull of licks he plays in bars 14; 16 and 18. And there’s this wonderful lick at the start of each Chorus. Listen for instance at bars 19 and 27. And he plays this lick in just a little detail different in the second Chorus. Listen to bars 49 and 57 where he doesn’t play a slide directly from D to E (as he does in bars 19 and 27) but first plays the D note short (staccato) to give the slide towards the E an extra accent. Beautiful! And in bar 70 there’s also a beatiful lick! In the different solo’s Chuck Rainey chooses to play ‘straight forward’. There’s enough going on there because of the groove; putting an 2/4 measure in the middle and the solo instruments. So there’s no need to play (difficult) basslicks there. Also the bassline in the fourth solo and in the outro seems to be straight forward, but the the cyncopated rhythm makes it very interesting and joy to play!
